Debra Buckland-Coffey, CEO & Board Member
Originally from Anderson, Indiana, Debra has lived in San Diego since 2014 with her husband, Jon, their two sons, Christopher and Johnathan, and their small menagerie of pets: two dogs, a miniature pig, and a bearded dragon. Debra is an internal medicine/ hospital medicine physician holding a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from Park University. She is passionate about ensuring equal access to healthcare and providing education about health related issues. In her spare time, Debra enjoys practicing Pilates, playing piano, and entertaining friends and family in her home.
Deward "Dewey" Houck, CFO & Board Member
Being awarded the Bausch & Lomb science and a New York State Regents scholarship, Dewey completed his B.S. in Geology with a minor in mathematics from SUNY Fredonia. He continued his studies as a graduate student attending University of Michigan in geophysics. Later on, he joined the U.S. Navy and admitted into the Naval Nuclear Power Program. Retiring with the rank of Commander, he attended University of San Diego School of Law later on becoming the owner and primary attorney for California Estate Planning & Probate in Lakeside, California alongside being involved with two nonprofits: the Gillespie Field Eagles and Peer Support Network.
Carmen Spalding, Interim Secretary
Carmen Spalding hails from Bermuda, but has called San Diego home since 2002. She is married to an active duty Navy Captain, and they have two incredible sons, and a new daughter-in-law. Carmen is a veteran Navy Nurse Corps Officer, serving a total of 10 years. She has been a nurse for nearly 25 years, receiving her B.S. in Nursing at Norfolk State University, her Master’s in Community Health Nursing at San Diego State University, and her PhD in Nursing from University of San Diego. Working as a school nurse, Carmen became passionately concerned with ensuring educational rights for medically fragile children, and has collaborated with a variety of community and municipal agencies to ensure her students were provided all the resources available to them. When she isn’t working, she enjoys spending time and playing games with her family and friends.
Jonathan Buckland, Board Member
Jon is a retired United States Marine Corps C-130 pilot. He has a Bachelor’s of Arts from Missouri State Univeristy, where he majored in Criminology and minored in Sociology. He has lived all over the United States, from Washington State to Missouri, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, and finally settling in Southern California with his family. Jon is currently working on his Master’s degree in Computer Science. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, completing home improvement projects, and spending time with friends and family.
Megan Hughes, Board Member
Megan is a San Diego native. She lives in Normal Heights with her husband Carl, 3 year old daughter Orla and brand new baby Clara. Megan is a graduate of the University of CA Santa Barbara and a Certified Pilates Instructor. She owns 3 Pilates studios in San Diego County. She has found strength and enormous satisfaction by helping others in their wellness journey.
Megan Hurley, Board Member
Megan is a Traumatic Brain Injury survivor from 2008 and a Zumba Fitness instructor & World of Dance U-Jam Fitness instructor. Both of these fitness formats serve as her physical and rehabilitative therapy. Originally from New York, Megan received her Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in biology from Fairfield University. She published the journey of her TBI recovery, Hope Survives: Strength After A Traumatic Brain Injury. Prior to her accident, she was an English teacher for high school & a college admissions counselor. With a passion for teaching and community outreach, she is dedicated to active with the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation. Megan's goal is to speak in schools about brain injury, acceptance, resilience & perseverance. Megan and her husband, Bob, visit family on the East Coast but are settled in sunny San Diego cheering on the Padres!
